Algebra 1 Textbook - Chapter 1 Variables, Basic Equations, and Fractions In this chapter, we will begin our discussion of algebra by introducing the concept of a variable. We discuss what a variable is and why variables are important in algebra. Next, we discuss numerical and algebraic expressions, parenthesis, order of operations, evaluating expressions, equations, fractions, and algebraic properties. Understanding the concept of variables is crucial to learning and progressing in countless fields, including physics, chemistry, engineering, and biology, as well as electrical work, carpentry, and business Then we will build upon that understanding by working through several examples.

It is important to grasp the fundamental concept of variables because everything we do from this point forward will require it View the lesson Algebra 1 Textbook - Chapter 1 - Lesson 3 - Evaluating Numerical Expressions, Part 1 Released - April 09, In this lesson, we will be introduced to evaluating numerical expressions. Despite sounding like a complicated procedure, evaluating numerical expressions is a fairly simple concept.

Once we have an understanding of what this means and work through several examples, you be able to handle the many numerical expressions which will show up in Algebra, higher math, and science View the lesson Algebra 1 Textbook - Chapter 1 - Lesson 4 - Evaluating Numerical Expressions, Part 2 Released - April 10, In this lesson, we will continue to evaluate numerical expressions and work through some examples which are a little more complex. It is important to be comfortable evaluating numerical expressions like these before moving on View the lesson Algebra 1 Textbook - Chapter 1 - Lesson 6 - Evaluating Algebraic Expressions, Part 2 Released - April 13, In this lesson, we will continue to evaluate algebraic expressions in order to gain confidence and strengthen our foundations.

Practicing problems like these will improve our ability to handle more complex material Order of Operations is extremely important in Algebra because doing math operations in a problem will frequently give us different answers depending on the order in which we do them This book, on the other hand, actually focuses on the math, explains it reasonably well, and has great sets of real example problems and practice problems of all difficulty levels, including lots of practical problems that aren't forced or contrived.

Great job Glencoe. Algebra 1 teacher at Honors high school.

Great textbook for my 8th grade son. The book is in excellent condition.

Only 3 left in stock more on the way. I got this book for one reason I needed to introduce formal proof in an Algebra 1 course in a meaningful way, and I needed to find a text book that had good explanations for the students as well as good exercises for them to do.

I have a library of perhaps 15 different Algebra 1 textbooks published over the past 30 years and not one of them has more than a passing reference to formal proof. This text book has, by comparison, a reasonably thorough introduction to formal proof, and enough exercises so that I can have students practice what they need to practice and learn what they need to learn.

It's written at a level that my students will be able to learn from. It's also interesting to see how much material in that book no longer appears in Algebra 1 textbooks these days: Linear programming, systems Prentice Hall Mathematics: Algebra 1.
