When posted on the internet, how much is done to determine if those posts are, in fact, correct? The result is usually knee-jerk reactions, which we have seen happen many times in the media, culminating in ruinous character assassinations and job losses.
Coben makes a statement about these outlets and results that are all too familiar. For readers familiar with his work, Coben includes an excellent character in Caught that will bring a smile to all fans.
Coben's Caught will provide some worthwhile diversion from a long flight, a night of television, or while enjoying a vacation. It won't provide a lot of suspense, but it does pack the thrills. Dan Mercer, a dedicated child social worker, is caught in a TV sting operation by Wendy Tynes, a reporter who has made a career of taping and broadcasting supposed pedophiles caught in the act. Wendy comes off as pretty stereotypical at first, like a female reporter who has no scruples.
As the story progresses, however, she seems to find her conscience. Dan claims that he was set up, and Wendy wonders if perhaps Dan really was innocent. Dan is an enigma. As the story progresses, it may very well be the reader who is caught.
There are folks in this tale who learn some hard lessons. There is also some stuff that is pretty unrealistic. I did get a few laughs at the sarcasm, but the attitude of the lawyers was over the top. Jun 10, miteypen rated it it was ok. Not one of Coben's best.
For one thing, a character who speaks in the first person in the prologue immediately fades into the background after I had become intrigued by his story. I think it would have been stronger if he had been the protagonist, a man trying to get out of his own predicament.
Instead, Coben switches to a new character and I couldn't quite get into her. For one thing, the book changes from first person to third. He briefly introduces a character from other books of his, but t Not one of Coben's best. He briefly introduces a character from other books of his, but that's unsatisfying, too, because he's a rather colorful character and here he's only given a bit part.
In this book, he served only as an easy way for the main character to get information that she would have had trouble getting otherwise. That was the main weakness of the book: She just suddenly "knows. Not exactly a waste of time it was a quick read , but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as an introduction to Harlan Coben's work.
Mar 24, Stacey rated it it was amazing. It really does not need to be said that this was an excellent read. One should only look at who the author is and then immediately would know that they are in for a treat.
This book like all of this author's books really packs a punch from the first page until, literally, the very last page. As promised, the author delivers another WTF ending that leaves you with adrenaline pumping and dizzy from excitement. My first impression was that she was another self-centered, career-minded, don't care who I step on as I climb this very wobbly ladder, reporter.
My impression changed swiftly as the plot unravels and my goodness does this plot unravel fast! I highly recommend this book to Those who are new to Harlan Coben, life-long fans, and those who are still left standing in the dark wondering where have all the good authors gone.
Look no further. View 1 comment. This author was recommended by my dentist, so I gave him another shot. The main theme of trial by public opinion was superbly done. I hate to see public postings of arrests since it assumes guilt before trial. In the case of child molestation, it is especially damaging. All it takes is a believable false accusation to completely ruin a person. I was appalled the show To Catch A Predator since it smacks of entrapment that is all too easily spoofed.
I can't recall when I've read a twistier mystery.
Excellent foreshadowing this time, too. Wow, what a ride! There were quite a few false notes peppered throughout the story. No big ones this time, but a number of irritating ones.
I kept muttering that she should take notes if her memory was that bad, but 2 friends told me they didn't catch these issues either. Sep 24, Corey rated it it was amazing Shelves: I had to take so many notes with this one and by the end I had to go back a bit until I had it figured out.
Just when you think it's gonna go in one direction, instead it goes in the exact opposite!

I'm not even going to get into detail about this book because I'm the worse person to explain a mystery without ruining it. Just take my word that you will enjoy it.

Wendy has been successful with these ploys until she catches one Dan Mercer, who protests his innocence and is acquitted, only to find himself the target of outraged parents.

This promises to be an engaging plot, but it becomes so complicated with a conglomeration of ancillary characters that the plot gets lost in the shuffle.
The point of all this is that Wendy may indeed be guilty of fingering an innocent man, and she longs for his forgiveness, and she must reconcile her anger at the drunk driver with her guilt over her mistaken judgment.

Wrapped up in a revenge tragedy
My first! Yes my first Harlan Coben novel, so far so good. Feb 01, Sherri Thacker rated it really liked it Shelves: This took me a long time to read but I really enjoyed it.
It kept me guessing till the very end. Oct 20, Jenny Maloney rated it liked it Shelves: The Premise: He insists he's being set up. When the case against him is thrown out, she questions her conclusions. When she witnesses Mercer's murder Of course, as she digs deepers, the troubles job loss, death threats, etc.
The Big Issue: This is one convaluted story, with subplots within subplots within subplots. While Coben walks a fine line he The Premise: While Coben walks a fine line here, I think he basically pulls it off. And, in my opinion, that's the weakness of the story. I can download Wall Street traders ripping retirees out of their retirement. I can download a reporter questioning her headlining pedophile story. I can download shadowy figures out to seek revenge for any of the following: I can download a schizophrenic man holding the clues to everything in his broken psyche.
Way harder to download all of that in one novel. And, oh yes, the above situations are all in there, plus some that I haven't mentioned But I'm not giving anything away.
I'd have to rewrite the book in order for anyone reading here to understand the different levels going on. In the book's defense, however, the various layers - which make the story rather incoherent when you try to explain it to a stranger - do not let you put the book down.
The pages keep turning. I finished this book in a one-page-turn-after-another day. But, if you're anything like me, you'll be left with a little tinge of: Lesser Issues a. My Personal Pet Peeves: The way technology is presented. For example, I don't download for one iota of a second that any reporter - local, national, international, or alien - worth their salt as main character Wendy is portrayed does not have a Facebook account And I'll leave it at that.
The Good Stuff: The side characters rocked my world. I loved the "Fathers Club. Yeah, I didn't list it above, but middle-aged-white-man-rapping is in this book too! Some of the other reviewers have mentioned Win. Only a few pages, but he's there and he makes an impression. I adored the cartoony lawyers: Though I do have an issue with how Crimstein is portrayed as rather 'brilliant'.
Mostly she was like a bulldog - any police department would've pushed charges with the evidence stacked against her client Enjoyed this one. It's a good, quick read with literally a million points of interest. Definitely worth your time if you're in the market for an entertaining weekend. May 09, Patrice Hoffman rated it liked it. I enjoyed reading this Coben novel.
It has all the same traits as any of this author's other books. There are twists, lies, and shocking revelations. Coben always manages to grip the reader from page one. The story begins with Dan Mercer entering a house he suspects he really shouldn't be in. The red door is screaming at him to stop and turn the other way. Lo and hold, he's being setup by Wendy Tynes to be captured on video as a sexual predator.
Wendy I enjoyed reading this Coben novel. Wendy is the host of the type of show. The novel progresses on to findout if he's in fact the monster that he's being accused of being.
Harlan Coben always manages to take the reader on twists and turns that are never seen coming. The writing is always easy and to the point. There are always a lot of characters that seemingly are just bystanders until they come into the forefront.
That may also be the reason why the ones in this particular book are a little stale. When I want a good, fun , easy read the depth of the characters is not that important to me.
I mean c'mon. It's a thriller for God's sake. Overall, this book is classic Coben. If you're a fan of Coben, you will enjoy this book. My only gripe is that after reading a few of his books, the formulaic ending is sometimes maddening. The first few times it's read you're like "Whoa" but after reading it so many more times, it's like "enough already! Anyway, I did enjoy this book and can't wait to read the next one I have sitting on my shelf somewhere at home.

Dan becomes her latest target but his story soon becomes tangled in a web of lies. A helicopter flew overhead. Ted reached his hand back. Marcia took it. He pulled her up. And the two of them resumed their search for their daughter.
I thoroughly recommend it and I shall look forward once more to the next stand-alone Coben novel. She hopes one day literary writers will take heed of this …].
Aside from that, this novel seems to work on several level, as a mystery, as a character study, as an exploration of moral issues. That would make it so much more than just a suspense novel. It still sounds like too much for me, but an excellent choice for those less wimpy.
Certainly quite strong themes, Jackie, as you say — so not one for all. But far deeper in the stand-alone work than the average thriller writer. I may have to remedy that. The stand alone novels have a formula just as the Bolitar novels do; however the Bolitar novels excel because of the character development, the humor and attachment the readers have to the people in the story.

Readers also enjoyed. I read a lot of mysteries and I gotta' tell ya', Harlan had me wondering until the end. The drawback was that I found myself reviewing the characters, plot twists, and revelations for much of the next day.
