Supportive friendships formed through baking, openness about differences in social class and family structure, and the hint that the four 'mean girls' will mature and come around over the course of the series. Scholastic Book Wizard places this book at around a third grade reading level, and third-fifth grades are probably most appropriate for it.

It's a book about starting middle school that takes a pleasantly upbeat, encouraging angle on it, and I'm sure it'd be great for the fifth grader on the cusp of a big change who needs just a bit of reassurance and a recipe to try! Sixth-grader Katie Brown is excited about starting middle school until her best friend Callie ditches her on the first day of school in favor of her new summer camp "mean-girl" friends.

On top of that, her locker won't open, her math teacher is mean, and she's terrible at volleyball in gym! But when Mia, Emma, and Alexis join her at her lunch table, Katie makes new friends who share her love of cupcakes.

Bland and unoriginal with so-so writing, but tween girls love this series, so I wanted to read one. It's the Baby-sitters' Club of today, the sort of book my mother would have tried to get me not to read because it was too easy and not substantial enough Oct 07, Iris rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a book about this girl called Katie and her mother is a dentist.

Now Katie has to meet new friends because her best friend went with another group of friends who aren't very nice. The y invent new recipes and the recipes are in the back of the book. Each book goes into the mind of a different person in the club. Jan 11, Balletprincess rated it really liked it Shelves: I only gave it four stars because mentioning that vampire movie' meaning twilight was unnecessary since the girls who are going to read this are not old enough to read or watch twilight, a teen book and movie series.

Also Maltese do not shed so Kaite would not have had fur on her when her mom picked her up.

Other than those two points the first book in the cupcake diaries series was read really good. Nov 05, Asuka rated it really liked it Shelves: Cute book about making new friends and traversing the muddy waters of transition from elementary school to middle school. Kati my 7-year-old niece 's review: I really liked this book its about this girl named katie who has to sit alone at lunch because her best friend sat with other people but then she meets her real best friends and she formed d a cupcake club with them i really liked that the main caracters name was katie like me!

My review: I love cupcake diaries! I've read all the other books in the series, but was a little confused because I had never read the first one this one , because they don't have it at Kati my 7-year-old niece 's review: I've read all the other books in the series, but was a little confused because I had never read the first one this one , because they don't have it at my local library.

But one day my niece Kati was visiting and we went to the farther away library. To my delight because I knew Kati would love it they had the first book! She was staying for a week, and we read it together. It was a cute story--a lot like the other books in the series.

It explained a lot to me that I hadn't fully understood before, like Katie's relationship with Callie. The book is about a girl named Katie who is struggling on her first day of middle school I can relate--who can't?

I love how they bond over cupcakes--so perfect! The girls form a cupcake club, which soon turns into a business in the later books.

But meanwhile--Katie keeps thinking about Callie. Can she still be BFFs with her, even if Callie 1 doesn't sit with her at lunch 2 only cares about her new friends and 3 doesn't stand up to Katie when her new "popular" friends tease her?

Mia, Alexis, and Emma are much better friends. I mean, a friend shouldn't be someone who dumps you to be popular. I think lots of kids including Kati can learn from this book, and the whole series. It teaches a lot, and along the way you can relate to Katie and her problems.

Happy reading!!! Jan 09, Pooja Banga rated it liked it. Jul 01, Sandra Girard-Demontigny rated it liked it Shelves: In spite of myself I saw the high school experience all over again. I like the character of Katie and her 4 new friends. I appreciated that one of the clubs is being shut down at the end of this novel. J'aime bi 3.

J'aime bien le personnage de Katie et de ses 4 nouvelles amies. Jan 06, Hope rated it liked it. This book was cute enough, but also, rather bland to be honest. I couldn't help but compare it to children's series I used to read as a kid, such as The Baby-sitter's Club. All of the BSC characters were unique and special in their own ways.

The protagonists of this series - Katie, Mia, Alexis, and Emma - were very much alike and are a bit easy to confuse. Flat characterization, is a term that comes to mind. The book is wholesome and sweet, but lacking somehow. That said, I'll probably give anoth This book was cute enough, but also, rather bland to be honest.
