Shadow Man is a masterpiece thriller, in my humble opinion. It ticks off all the boxes important to me. The character development is simply stunning and unlike that I have ever seen in any other thriller.

We even learn about the minor characters.

Deep stuff. Psychological stuff. The stuff that makes these people who they are and what they do and think. There are whole chapters devoted to where the team members are psychologically.

Boring, you say? Far, far from it.

This is deep, meaningful, and dare I say, moving storytelling. Even the assholes have integrity.

The Face of Death

I came to love every member of the team. I must issue one warning. The thriller aspects to the story are intense, dark and depraved. It takes a lot to scare me off, and I had no major issues tolerating the degree of evil and debasement depicted in Shadow Man, but I do understand it will be too much for some readers.

Otherwise, the plot was complex and suspenseful. It was intriguing watching the FBI team go from nearly no leads at all to cracking the case. The clues are there if you are smart enough to follow them, but I was fooled big time in the end.

Thriller fans, do not deprive yourself of this most brilliant book. Final thoughts: 1 Cory McFadyen has apparently disappeared off the face of the literary world.

There is no Google data on him for the last several years. This is tragic. Enabled Page Flip: site Cloud Reader Read instantly in your browser. What other items do customers download after viewing this item?

The plot and storyline are excellent but throughout the book, there are lags, many pages of philosophic content and over-explanation of methods and forensics. It's a pattern as some truly horrific violence has occurred and McFadyen is all-in with the gore here, much more so than previously and next, the moralizing.

Both are redundant and distract from the story. Without any spoilers, this is a new level of gruesome for Smoky et al, which makes it difficult to read in terms of very explicit and disturbing descriptions of violence and depravity. All of McFadyen's books have similar extremely detailed violence, which I expect, but this one was sharply exaggerated in many pages devoted to the sick-making details of the "evil" crime and then many more pages spent moralizing --Rinse, repeat.

McFadyen really went all-in on the gore with this one.

There were a couple of descriptions that made me feel a little bit sick and that's never happened before. The premise of the book started out well, a really unique investigation, but I could see the end pages before the book ended. The story wasn't well-developed and some of the characters aren't really "there" any longer.

For example, does anyone believe Tommy and Bonnie are anything but props in this novel? Even the Alan character seems diminished. There's way too much overlap from previous books in the series as well. Kirby and Callie are predictable "honey-love" is so old by now it's irritating; Kirby.

I'd like to see less of them instead of the much more that's here. James as a character is believable and should be more well-developed, more seen and heard. Obviously, Tommy has a story that feels integral to Smoky's character development. I'd love to read it, but he's marginalized yet again to a docile, submissive "extra man," domesticated like a house cat by Smoky.

This isn't consistent with Smoky's description of his exaggerated machismo. Impossible to see him glued to the TV, passively watching and waiting with the children until Smoky's next news-making crisis. Tommy is "strong and silent? Not to pick nits, but how many identical graphic descriptions of Smoky's bodily functions are necessary?

I wasn't going to mention this but why not?

Shadow Man

I ask myself what's McFadyen thinking as he writes the very disturbing, very explicit violence in these pages. Then I wonder what's wrong with me that I'd want to read it. Next time, I'll wait for some reader reviews. This one left me feeling "slimed" and that's something no book has ever done before. McFadyen has had a long break and hopefully, he'll get back to the original series of suspense and action. Even with a great plot, he's fallen short of his mark in The Truth Factory.I know it sounds crazy, but if you read even one Smoky Barrett book, you'd agree completely.

I thought that was done sufficiently just as the plot unfolded. The character development is simply stunning and unlike that I have ever seen in any other thriller. Leia mais Leia menos. I felt love, hate, rage, tension, shock, empathy, sympathy, sadness, heartache, and joy.
