Devil on the Cross argues quite convincingly—so convincingly that, for a moment, I became a . The great Kenyan writer and Nobel Prize nominee's novel that he wrote in secret, on toilet paper, while in prison—featuring an introduction by Namwali Serpell.

Luther gets pulled into what appears at first to be a simple kidnapping case when a girl named Dakota shows up out of the blue. Turns out, however, that it's much much more complex than that.

Devil on the Cross

With the forces of both heaven and hell on her trail, Luther finds himself in way over his head, but he's determined not to let Dakota down. Lucky girl! It's a pretty wild ride, and while things do end on a positive note, they don't exactly "end. This was a free site book. I would've enjoyed the book much more, however there were very BIG irritating repeating parts. The main character is a chain smoker. After reading the shorter stories of Luther Cross I was happy to see the full length novels.

Luther may need some fleshing out in the sequels but he is an enjoyable character. Although he is a crossbreed of demon and human, he is also a black character. Should this make a difference? No, why should it? His race is never an issue nor should it be.

So if you are looking for social statements on race, you wont get it. Thank you Mr. Constantine for that.

I have read many books by Mr.

Constantine and enjoyed them all, some more than others. His characters are always interesting, whether they are good, evil or somewhere in the middle. His stories are entertaining and sprinkled with light humor. I don't know how you can read his stories and not be entertained and come away at least liking the story. I'm a big fan of this author and encourage the reader to give Luther Cross a try.

As long as Mr. Constantine continues writing, I will be reading.

One person found this helpful. I like a good urban fantasy, and Devil's Due sets its noir stage with some coloful characters and an intriguing premise. I'm sure this is a ploy to get devoted fans to fork over for another installment, but it's unsatisfying for the dilettante reader.

I really was geared up to love this book before I even read it because it has a minority protagonist which is a rarity. The author strikes me as someone who realizes that the minority community is literally starved for representation in the paranormal realm and decided to slap a black face on his character to rake in the bucks.

There is nothing in this book that is remotely relevant to any particular ethnicity. Bye, Felicia Incredibly entertaining. I had bought this book a while ago on kids Nile but had never gotten around to reading it. Son bought me an echo dot and when I realized it would read to me from my site book collection this is the first book I picked. Excellent mystery, though I saw a twice time where the info everyone was looking for could have been revealed by a simple question Very nicely done!

Luther Cross is a cambion, a half human, half demon hybrid, the only one of his kind. Imbued with unique talents, he works as a paranormal investigator in Chicago. When a young girl shows up at his door seeking protection from a cult that has enslaved her and impregnated her with a mystical being, Luther is compelled to take her case. Luther and his charge are threatened by both Heaven and Hell as they endeavor to discover what supernatural being is responsible for her condition and why.

Great reading for fans of Jim Butcher and Kim Harrison. A strong, personal tone makes for good storytelling. Constantine uses the paranormal plotlines to his advantage; we're concerned less with the characterization or individual details of the people and places involved, but enthralled with the ambiance of menace and discomfort built through skillful inclusion of the macabre.
